ryan essentially dropped out at a very terrible time. no time to replace, and he was def not going to be on the ballot for people to vote for anyway. alan keys was a hilarious backup choice, and obama essentially was unopposed in being brought to the national spotlight. you could argue he would have won anyway, but the polls were done in april, well before any real campaigning started and this was illinois, and as a consequence his campaign seemed to be the most successful ever in illinois and so donors looked and barack obama to be groomed for president, which he then became. but that was largely because of Jeri Ryan's sexiness
