The problem is that Iran's elected leaders don't have any real power. Their military leaders and judicial leaders are not elected. Khomeini is there for life.
Sigmund Freud defined four parts of a psyche; the id, the ego, the superego and the stratego. The Stratego being the highest form of morality and scientific thinking.

The main difference is that some religious guys pick the slate of fake candidates in Iran, and some rich guys pick the slate of fake candidates here. Other than that the process is basically the same, to give the appearance of democracy without disturbing the actual structure of power.
