That region of the world loves the United States. They don't hold anything but unadultered love in their hearts for us. They want us to keep them safe, to involve ourselves in their affairs, to do what is best for them even when they don't know what that is.

I can only see it doing the opposite. If we back the Sunnis in Syria we burn what-ever good will we have with the Shia in Iraq...our em, "allies" there. It will also mean backing the Kurds again, which will again make the Turks mad. I can't think Jordan would be too keen on the establishment of an unstable and likely Islamist state on their Northern border. the Saudis probably don't really care. We can't burn good-will with Israel.
