Amazon builds functionality on top of it and customizes it as it sees fit.

This may be a dumb question but is the Fire 3G capable?

They're not too expensive and I've been thinking of getting one, but I don't want to be slave to wifi availability.

All the Fire models are wireless only EXCEPT for one of the 8.9" new Fire HD models.. There's 2 of these new 8.9" models, 1 is wireless only for $299 and this other one with 4g that will cost $499.. All the 7" Fire models, new and old, are wireless only.

I'm guessing Amazon is taking a page out of Apple's book on how to fleece their customers.. $200 more for 4g? That's like when Apple charges $100 more for a few more gigs of RAM on the iPods...

Anyway Amazon will also be offering a Data plan for the 4g 8.9" model for $50 a YEAR.. It's capped at 250mb a month for that year.. That isn't much data, but for only $50 a year, and if you only check forums and your email 250mb might work..

As far as I know Amazon will only ship these to the US only..

I bought a mini notebook a year ago for $125 at a pawn shop. It does well as my kindle (free for PC ) and to do any work or get on the internet. Light weight I can carry it in my purse. If I have an earbud w/ me I can also use it as a phone with google talk or Yahoo (they can call you back on the Yahoo one and it's not very expensive yearly).
So as always I will wait till the dust settles before buying "the new thing" which at any moment is so apt to be replaced.
