I don't live in the city, I live about 1 hour north...
But there's a b'zillion things to do in. and out of NYC.. It's according to what you like.. Lots of sports, tons of food and bars in the city.. And upstate there lots of history... Cooperstown and Saratoga are 2 of the nicest small towns/cities you'll ever see. And Saratoga has the race track open in August.. It's a beautiful, and the oldest race track in the US.. Lot's of fun..
If you are into the outdoors there's a lot of lakes, camp sites, trails, etc in both the Catskills and the Adirondacks. NY has the 2nd most lakes of any state( of course that's according to who is doing the counting, but anyway there is a lot of lakes here) Lots of wineries in the Hudson Valley too.. Not great wine, it's not in the same class as California wine, not even close.. But the wineries, and some are also near Monasteries, are fun to see and walk around.
NY is an expensive, PITA state.. But it has everything.. I love the fact that 1 weekend we travel 90 mins and be in NYC, and the next weekend we travel 90 mins and we're in the mountains..
