I don't think some of you get it
this isn't about race per say. It's not about race on it's on merit.
This race hits home to middle class African Americans because of the assumptions that George Zimmerman made IMHO
1. that the only reason a black teenager can be in a upper middle class neighborhood is if he's getting ready to rob someone.
2. That any black male who isn't wearing polo shorts and spurry's is a thug.
I really don't think George Zimmerman is a racist. He probably knows some black people and has no problem with them. I do think however he let his sterotypes of african Americans cloud his judgement.
I am black. I grew up in a upper middle class suburb of little rock (Chanel Valley). I can't count how many times I've walked home, especially before i was old enough to drive. At the time I was really into the urban culture, i had braids that came down to the middle of my back, I wore baggy jeans and timberland boots. More times than not i was coming home from my bus stop, as i Played basketball and the bus dropped me off at the bottom of the sub division and i had to walk home from there, about a half a mile walk. Or I walked to the grocery store to get something or i was walking home from a high school football game. Or the time I sunk into this girl's house at 2am, just being a teenager doing teenage boy stuff.
I wasn't a bad kid. IN fact I was a straight arrow, never got into any real trouble. Was in all AP classes. That's just how I dressed. I cannot fathom walking home on a normal day and having some dude follow me, in a place where I live and my mom paid a mortgage just like everyone else there, and being harassed because of the way I dressed and the color of my skin. This isn't 1960.
These same neighborhoods are people I knew, most of them would give me a ride home if they saw me walking and they were in their car. I cut most of their yards in the summer. One of them had a basketball goal and let me use his goal whenever I felt like it. To imagine one of them chasing me and harassing me, is unimaginable. To alot of people like myself.
