When I used to work at a pizza place in the city, we'd serve drunk people all night. It was always super busy, so the pizzas would come out of the 575F oven, go into the 170F warmer, and be served within minutes. We were specifically instructed to let them sit for a minimum of three minutes, even if it made the lineup longer. Why? Because a few years before, some guy took a bite of a slice right out of the oven, and it gave him third-degree burns all in his mouth, on his lips, on his tongue, etc.
Knowing that it wasn't safe, we took precautions to ensure that it sat long enough, because we knew someone would get hurt. McDonald's knew their coffee could hurt someone, did nothing, than refused to even pay for their medical bills when it did hurt someone. They absolutely deserve what they got, and if they didn't change the temperature or take other precautions afterwards, they deserve more.
