Actually, bullshit aside, the thing that helps me write the most is the dragon software. Really helps to get shit down on the pages.

A little different perspective - I think that the single best thing that can help a person become a good writer is to encourage them to read. A LOT. Reading gave me a good command of English, a fairly vast reference library of words to choose from (from which to choose) and a appreciation for what makes good reading and what makes poor reading.
