I've said it before and I'll say it again: the individual interpretation of the Second Amendment virtually guarantees an overreaching and excessive police force, and is frequently used to justify the militarization of police (as Charai has pointed out).
I can assure you that if the Second Amendment was exercised through a national militia, run by citizens and with regulatory powers over guns, you'd have a force not only capable of standing up to government, but you'd have a strong regulatory body that would implement common sense gun control laws.
The Switzerland model desperately needs to be imported to North America (and slightly modified). In one fell swoop, you'd be able to decrease the size of the military, train and arm your populace, increase the ability of all citizens to defend themselves from state and non-state actors alike, and actually have a meaningful relationship with an Amendment that has categorically failed to do what it is intended to do.
