So you muscle AQ out of Syria - now what? They will simply engage in.and fund low-risk terrorism, forcing the new government to do a crackdown, which in turn causes instability and drives extremism. Rinse and repeat. The entire goal of Al Qaeda and 9/11 was to draw the US into various conflicts, because you can't ever win them.

I'm not saying that we leave Syria to its own devices like we did in Afghanistan. I'm saying that we don't support either side over the other. If Assad wants to buy concrete, food, medical supplies, etc. from us, we quote him the same price as the rebels, and vice versa.
