Char - how do you support the "good guys" and then guarantee that they ascend to power and hold onto that power? You do that, and they will simply look like (and, in truth, BE) puppets of the American imperialistic regime. Those types of government don't do so well in the ME.
Well, they do fine, when the US allows them to aggressively repress their own people and dissidents while we turn a blind eye. For reference, see:
