Makes more sense over there. Just saying, Spanish has better than 3 times as many native speakers, and the Spanish speaking world is a rapid up and comer in terms of commerce and economics.

The French...they've just got a serious linguistic complex.

The whole 'everyone knows a bit of French and should' thing is largely a relic of when a lot of the international institutions were being set up in the late 19th early 20th and then, it made sense to have French and English as the two diplomatic languages.

Its stupid now though, we should be teaching our kids Mandarin and Spanish as others have noted (there are also a few other contenders). Because as fun as it is to go to France and certain parts of north, west and central Africa. Its hardly got the utility that the notion of teaching kids a foreign language really requires.

Frankly there's more educational value in teaching kids Latin than French.

south america doesn't have much of an issue with english. it's central america. but they'll learn eventually.

and we ARE still trying to colonise them (taking the assumption that we ever stopped them from being a colony)

I'm getting to be point of being conversational in French. Self taught so my accent is patchy but getting much better (finally broke down and hired a nice Columbia girl to tutor me and fix the weird tic I have when tryin to pronounce Rs).

Can do h basics in Spanish. Enough to travel not enough to socialize.

I guess kinda some German but not anymore really. Was getting good last time I was there but don't care to learn it again. Ugly language.
