Iran is never going to destroy Israel. That's another urban legend that we keep being fed.
The reason we don't want Iran having nukes is that it would set off an arms race in the region. Well, that and of course Israel won't stand for Iran having nukes. Or Syria. Or Iraq--as they've demonstrated.
If, in your scenario, this is simply a Cold War Redux where now we are using Syria as the proxy instead of Afghanistan in the 80s, then we are truly screwed as a nation because clearly there are players behind the scenes pulling the strings--players who are stuck in the 1950s. Why in the hell in 2013 would you pick fights with... Russia? What threat do they pose to us? You would think China would be front and center but really? We're going back to the 80s? Or even Korea? Vietnam?
