Unless the discharge came with criminal charges or he was institutionalized for schizophrenia, he wouldn't have any issue passing a background check. Rights are removed through due process. Discharge from the military itself, even with misconduct, isn't a crime. You also can't deprive someone of a right because you think they are crazy, it needs to be proven.
On a side note, why do these shootings now seem to always be three guys that drop to one? I realize there is a lot of chaos, but it seems to be pretty specifically three people, then one.
