...weren't your parents, and you were there age and lived in the same area, do you think you'd be friends?

With my mom, I don't think so. She is too judgemental about certain lifestyle choices. Also, she is under the erroneous impression that, in order to be friends, you actually have to like each other. I have at least two friends who I don't actually like but, by experiencing certain things together, we've come to an understanding that is basically friendship.

With my dad, absolutely. He is a way cooler guy than me and I always try to surround myself with such people. Also, he enjoys good food and good beer, and has an excellent taste in women. So probably we'd be very good friends.

How about you guys?

Pretty similar to you. My father is cewl and laid back but my mother is too bitchy and too gossipy. My lifestyle kind of eliminates the possibility of friendship with stable ppl like my parents tho. My industry is a very insular community. We usually only hang out with each other or fellow vagabonds like carnies and travelling salesmen.

as for my mother, i think she would annoy the hell out of me. she already does. and we dont have too much in common. so i think if we randomly met somehow i would run far away....with her probably chasing after me bc she thinks im super cool

I've had a somewhat unique opportunity to work as a peer with both my parents. It has let me appreciate them as others (outside of family) see them. Both are great people.

Agreed, Prof, it is crucial to hang with your parents in a setting where you are equals. Takes the relationship to the next level. My dad has me do most of the website work and graphics design for his businesses, which he can't do... once he realized that it takes skill to do well, he started showing more respect about it, instead of just assuming my very different skillset was useless. In turn, our relationship is even closer than before.

My mom is a community hero, IMO, and I never realized it until I got out of the house and started associating with her as an adult. I cant count how many people she's helped over the years, so now when I do stuff with the Optimist Club, she does whatever she can to help. As I said I don't think we'd be friends otherwise, but her good heart is undeniable.

Id be able to talk with my dad. We wouldn't be great friends but we'd converse when we saw each other about sports and stuff.
