Except for a few choice school districts that garner public attention every year, the main problem is not teacher unions. Education is run by politicians and bureaucratic entities with no ties to teaching. Education has a higher turn-over rate than most professions. We have a huge administrative system. In large school districts there can be upwards of 500-1,000 district jobs.

My problem with the teachers union isn't that they demand good benefits and higher pay. I think teachers should get that, but only if they're doing a good job. If they're not doing a good job, they should get fired, and the unions like to make that difficult.

I agree with Sazari.

These teachers make $75,000 for 9 months of working 7 hour days. They pay nothing for their benefits and their pensions are worth millions. They have unbelievable job security and they are never evaluated. 79% of Chicago 8th graders are not proficient in reading... and these glorified babysitters deserve more than a 16% raise over the next 4 years? Fire them. There are far too many intelligent college graduates who need work to be giving into horse shit union demands.

The only consolation is that these teachers are so fat they will barely scratch their pension fund at this rate.

blame the teachers is as ignorant of the facts as "blame the president" for a bad economy. both can only do so much to fix a system that is largely outside of their direct control.

but you keep blaming pensions. it's the easy way to go.
