The Canadian system isn't perfect. Wait times are fairly common for non-lethal health problems that require major surgery. My Grandpa just waited a year for a knee replacement, for instance. On the other hand, a friend of the family had a major infection from a burst shit-organ of some variety, and received care immediately.
Point is, you'll be taken care of, and it won't ruin your life. I'm sure there are legit horror stories, but I can tell you one thing, none of them deal with an entire family being made bankrupt because one person got cancer.
On a personal note, I've received at least $100,000 worth of treatment in my lifetime, and it's cost me nothing. I am very thankful that others have chipped in for this. Between infant jaundice, severe epilepsy, a bad shoulder requiring multiple surgeries, and innumerable accidents, I've tallied up alot of care, and I don't know a single person who would say I should be denied because I can't afford it.
My only complaint is that I can't pay more taxes specifically towards health care.
I'd also like to see a modest fee introduced for visits to the family doctor. Say $10. That would go a long way.
