Virginia is a battleground because it is truly a bipartisan state. It also has an off year election for it's state office holders. In politics everything is about momentum and now the Democrats can claim the momentum going in 2016. This is why so much money came in from out of state. However, the Democrats shouldn't deceive themselves the Libertarian Candidate took enough votes that would have swung the election over to the GOP.

The race shows one thing that we know all ready the country is divided right down the middle. The TP is not popular with most Americans it can only win elections in gerrymandered House Districts. Until we totally ban any private funding of elections and go to mandated Public Financing of Campaigns outside money will always be there.
