Personally I'm not saying they need more protection then they have now.. But QB's do need to be protected differently then other players on the team. They are more important to the team( they start and handle the ball on almost every play), they're stationary, and they are in an awkward position when they are throwing the ball.
And as others here have said the NFL does not want 2nd and 3rd string QB's running the show. Manning vs Brady draws ratings.. Aaron Rodgers draws ratings.. Seneca Wallace or Matt Flynn( Packers just signed him---LOL) does not..
