Best blanket?

Guys and gals.

Here is what I need:

A large, warm, soft blanket so that I can make it through the winter. Otherwise, I'm going to freeze to death.

Any suggestions?

I bought a queen sized electric blanket a couple of years ago and honestly cannot imagine winter without it now. Was like $40 at Target. I'm sure there are others that are cheaper.

Get a 100% wool army surplus blanket if you're not concerned with looks (or dig the utilitarianism of them). They were used by most countries at one point in time and they're the warmest, cheapest blankets you'll find. They're also water resistant and don't melt. Alternatively, you can buy a handmade afghan from Goodwill that took someone 50 hours to make for like $5 because it belonged to an old person who died. I've seen some pretty good looking ones and they're nice and warm.

If you're not looking for a deal, Pendleton makes nice blankets.

One of those massive denim quilts made out of old jeans. The ones you have to hang from a tree to dry because it would take 4 hours in the dryer and waste power. Get your grandmother to keep you supplied like I do. (We have her handcuffed to a sewing machine in the basement.) If you have no grandmother, get on Etsy and buy one from someone else's grandmother. Mine is made mostly from my great grandfather's old jeans, and you can still see where he used to strike matches on them. Jeans used to be thick and awesome. He was a rancher and was apparently too badass so strike matches on the box, and so did it on his leg somehow.

I can literally wrap myself in the warmth of my ancestors and so I win this thread.

Homemade quilt stuffed with wool. All the heat-trapping qualities of a wool blanket, with the comfortable qualities of cotton exterior.

I have several that look exactly like this, made by my great-grandmothers decades ago. They have a few holes in them, but still are the best covers that we have.



That's a cool idea, Spider. We have a quilt (just the woven cloth top part, not the stuffing or bottom layer) that was stitched by my great-great-great-grandmother (don't know how many greats). She made it while walking on the Trail of Tears. It's heir loomed in a box now.

This is what I've been using for the last year, keep my house at 59 during the night only blanket we use. Get yourself some flannel sheets and a matching duvet cover and you're good to go.

Of course, the best option is to live somewhere that you don't need central heating (or any other kind of heater). Yeah, it gets down to 30* here occasionally. But, I haven't used our heater in years. Coldest the house has ever gotten was 58*. And, most nights it's 50* outside, so the inside is a nice 70* or so.

I turned on my A/C last night!
