A lot of people like to play baseball as well as watch it, though I'll agree we are the nerdiest subset of sports fans.
To your point about new innovations/tricks arising in soccer, that just speaks to a different dynamic . A lot of innovation and new schemes appear in College Football but are slow to catch on, if they ever do, in the NFL because there's going to be too much talent on the other side of the ball. That doesn't make college more sophisticated than the NFL, it just means there's a different dynamic in the competition.

I would say basketball is the mainstream sport that is closest to soccer in terms of tactics employed and endurance.

I loved baseball when I was a kid in the 70s. But so much has happened to mess it up I just can't care about it anymore. I was a big Red's fan during the Pete Rose era. I liked them and the Oakland A's when they had Reggie Jackson, back when I was a kid.
