Not saying I disagree with the premise (support of gun ownership), but guns have 1 purpose. To fling a couple ounces of soft metal at incredible speeds, in order to kill something. That something may be an animal or a person, but that's the sole purpose of a gun.
Cars MAY be used as weapons, but that's pretty far down on the list of things they are designed for.
Shades of grey, and I'm not talking about soccer-mom porn.

Sigmund Freud defined four parts of a psyche; the id, the ego, the superego and the stratego. The Stratego being the highest form of morality and scientific thinking.
If guns are not outlawed, the in-laws will have guns.

we need to take the psychological aspect into account. shooting someone from a distance is a lot less personal than knifing someone in the stomach or slitting their throat. or running people over. what may be hard to stomach before becomes relatively easy with a gun.
