Yeah that's not engineering. That's math.
And as I said, at least for where I go to school the teachers actually know the material and teach it to you, so no textbooks. You don't have to show up to class (it's extra credit sometimes if attendance is absurdly low for some reason), and really you could just show up and try and do the homework and exams or whatever. but you'd never make it. You can't learn it on your own. Just not possible for 99.999% of people.

I think it's totally justified because teachers can do what they want.
Why even quiz you? Why make you do anything? Who are they to tell you what you should know?
