Do we want a society where only a few can be egotists, or do we want one were everyone can be egotists, but without the power of massive financial systems fueling the egotism to heights that lead to the destruction of us all?

That is the point of decentralization and the diffusion of power. Egotism is a given, our best efforts at social conditioning have barely made a dent as far as ironing that out. That's why society is in the mess it is. We haven't come to fully understand ourselves as biological entities. Our society is in many respects not unlike a group of adolescents tossed into a "Lord of the Flies" type scenario.

Growth is driven by consumer demand.

The more people you have spending money on things above and beyond shelter, food and the necessities of life, the better the economy performs.

It is indisputable that driving wealth to the bottom stimulates the economy. How much goods and services do you think Apple's cash reserves are worth? Take that, split it into $1000 chunks, and give those chunks away a person at a time. That drives growth more than what the money is doing now.

And, no, I don't mean literally take Apple's cash reserves - it is to illustrate a point. Wealth redistribution is good for everyone. That is why Henry Ford paid more than anyone else... so his employees could afford one of his cars.
