Lorde is only 17 and seems to be intelligent for her age, you can't really expect her songs to compare lyrically with a bunch of 30 something year olds. Look at the Beatles progression in songwriting and lyricism as well. Just because it was shallow when they were young didn't mean it wouldn't develop.
And great songs don't necessarily have a lot of lyrical depth to them.
