Now that I'm a cynical old man I think the only impetus to get us off oil is when we finally realize that the supply is running out and it becomes a national security issue.

Either that or we get into wars over where all the remaining reserves are--like underneath the melting ice caps, which everybody and their cousin is claiming.

In the US? It all comes down to what affects our wallets.

When the price of a gallon of gas and heating oil dramatically rises, then we'll get serious about alternate energies.. Not before.

obviously it grew that much in a year. it melts and refreezes EVERY YEAR. the issue is that it's not freezing as much as it should, and areas that have remained permanently frozen are beginning to thaw.

I love mother Gia like most others, but this ice cap thing is just silliness.
The sun has more effect on the polar ice by many many orders of magnitude.

Its obvious that (the perversion of) the biosphere is much closer to what deserves this environmental concern then the ice cycles which is in no way extraordinary.

the arctic melts and freezes with the seasons. none of those photos would be surprising even if the region wasn't warming at an alarming rate.

Considering the above postings and that many alpine glaciers have gained in mass.... the reports on the lack of activity on the sun is the story, not the gas guzzlers on Main Street.

i know what albedo is, and i know how ice affects it. stop pontificating. areas all over the world that have had permanent snow and ice for as long as humans can remember are melting and getting warmer on average. this is undeniable, empirical science.

"sun isn't active" is pseudo-scientific drivel. the sunspot cycle does not determine how warm our planet is, otherwise our climate would radically shift every decade.
