It's the meaning behind the words that make them offensive.

Wanker, twat and pratt all indicate the recipient is intellectually challenged, but each word is usually reserved for a particular type of idiocy and is often preceded by the word stupid.

sod and bugger are usually reserved for the children, or the childish. An adult would be a stupid one, a child a little one.

The 'C' word, which is censored here, is the worst insult you can call anyone. It means they are utter scum and a bit more besides.

A lot of my American friends have picked up the insult 'wanker' from the Brits in our social circle; it sounds weird hearing it in an American accent. Also Americans can't pronounce 'twat' properly, they say it like 'Twart'.

I think the British are familiar with most American cuss words as we are so much more influenced by the US culture than the US is by UK culture (TV, movies etc).

The British also seem to like to make up humourous insults which I don't notice Americans do... although maybe that's because I don't always get American humour.

The 'C' word is the worst word you can say over here. Although women take offence to it more, and in Welsh (living in a Welsh speaking area) the 'C' word is used constantly and is nowhere near as offensive as it is in British English. People will often greet people as 'iawn c***' which essentially is 'Alright c***'. Although I have heard that is just local to the particular dialect of Welsh spoken where I live.

But if Americans are saying f*** is the worst word over there then that seems weird, I mean it's bad over here but it's nothing on the 'c' word.

Btw in the response to the use of the word 'governor', that is very local to certain areas of London, almost no one uses it.
