Maybe the "atheist church" from the OP isn't actually about attacking Christianity or copying religion or what ever.. There are many benefits to be had from a community exploring weighty matters together and it doesn't necessarily have to be in the context of a religious congregation that worships a "deity".
Even having an analog of a "reverend" to conduct services and talk to people who are having difficulties could be very useful as a leader and organizier for community efforts etc.
In fact that idea of a supernatural agency doesn't really work for many people any more so what's wrong with dropping the religious stuff and just having a weekly community congregation? There's plenty of stuff for the whoever is conducting the service to discuss without wasting time on fairy tales.
