I'm with you. A church of atheism is ridiculous. That said, if someone asks me about my opinion, I don't generally hold back unless they are old people.

There are a lot of feelings about religion though, among militant atheists. They view it as a boat anchor that actively damages society and is the root cause of most of the worlds pain, suffering, and misery. Religion to them amounts to Satan, and being openly and actively opposed to it is only doing good for humanity.

I personally still think religion in the developed world works out to a wash. Some nastyness, but a lot of good as well.

In the developing world, where they are still cutting people's heads off with swords and blowing shit up, however...

Kind of a different concept but still very similar in many respects.

Maybe the "atheist church" from the OP isn't actually about attacking Christianity or copying religion or what ever.. There are many benefits to be had from a community exploring weighty matters together and it doesn't necessarily have to be in the context of a religious congregation that worships a "deity".
Even having an analog of a "reverend" to conduct services and talk to people who are having difficulties could be very useful as a leader and organizier for community efforts etc.

In fact that idea of a supernatural agency doesn't really work for many people any more so what's wrong with dropping the religious stuff and just having a weekly community congregation? There's plenty of stuff for the whoever is conducting the service to discuss without wasting time on fairy tales.
