Have you considered writing a series of short(er) stories? Novels are beasts to write and really require a lot of dedicated time.

Or even do a serial. Break it up into a dozen pieces or so, rather that trying to carry the whole thing around in your head for 400 pages or whatever. You can stitch it up into a single narrative later on, after you've had ongoing feedback.
