The past 5 or so years have been the giant turning point in modern history in regards to LGBT rights. Remember as recently as the 08 election, Obama felt the need to tip toe around equality for homosexuals. Now it's hard to imagine any Democrat getting nominated without enthusiastically supporting LGBT equality. More and more it seems hard to imagine how it isn't going to be prohibitively damaging to any Republican in the general even.

Anyone still fighting against the current probably realizes its over, but some people can't throw in the towel when they're so invested. I think young progressives today don't even think of being pro-gay rights as something brave and heroic. It should just be a given.

On a side note, I can't stand the term "City Councilor". Councilman or Councilwoman is fine. Council Member works. City Councilor just sounds wrong.
