Actually, Iran arguably is one of the more sane players in the region.
The problem of course is the Mullahs, who don't want to give up power and use religion (who doesn't!) as their instrument of oppression. Get rid of them and you have a nation (a young one too) of people who seem to be very western-friendly.
As opposed to those nations full of people who are chomping at the bit to detonate themselves as soon as they can get close to westerners.
Gee I dunno: if you were going to play the long game and back a horse in the region, what do you think? We've saddled up on Saudi Arabia and their brand of Sunni for decades and look how that's turned out.
