We can all agree 5 is the least impressive of the series, though all seasons were impressive.

2 didn't take the show off track, it just requires the viewer to redefine his/her scope of what one series can encompass. People act like they just abandoned the storyline a from season 1. A ton of shit happened with the Barksdale crew in that season, they just weren't the targets of a major police investigation that season.

I consider the Wire to be one long novel so I dont believe into subdividing it by seasons, I do like the overall series and thats what matters.

There are a few consistent story lines but for each season they chose a different theme to focus on. It's not coincidence 4 is all about schools and then you barely see prez in 5, or that two is all about the docks and you only see those guys pop up in cameos in the later seasons.

It can be both. And working in the context of seasons does not require that you insert a different topic into each season.

I adhere to the novel interpretation. It is a novel about a city in decline.

Either way, Simons explicitly stated that they shifted focuses from one season to the next, and this is pretty obvious from the story lines.
