We've come a long way since 2008. The debate is over in America now. The Republicans lost.

Whereas in 2008 the debate was still in full swing and culture warriors were serious people instead of caricatures of a by gone era like they are today.

I was never a fan of using the Olympic games to make political points.

If you don't like Russia or how they do whatever, then don't have the games there. That's on the IOC, IMO.

Where were all the protests when Sochi was selected? Waiting until now is just a bit too late. Start then.

I don't know why Russian men would be so homophobic. Seems to me that the more gays there are, the more available Russian women there will be. And those that know me understand my fondness of Russian gals.

the stray dog thing was dumb and really made me go "huh?".

in some US states a small % of shelter animals, often ill or un-adoptable, are put to sleep. In others tens of thousands of animals are killed in gas chambers hooked up to diesel engines every year.

in total just under 3 million adoptable cats and dogs are killed in shelters every year:

The Olympics are one of the most internationally politicised events on the planet whether you like it or not.

Again, there was a shed load of stuff about Chinese atrocities in the build up to Beijing over here.

It's unfortunately part of politics that the pressure on human rights abuses will be massively increased when public interest on a certain country is higher. Hence the increased criticism closer to the games. This happened in Beijing too. I'm sure closer to the Qatar world cup a shit storm is gonna start brewing.
