i would define useful as something that has a practical purpose, a direct use. things that have ephemeral "use" are really stretching the definition. like a nice car being "useful" because, someone, somewhere, might think you have prestige for owning it.

not really. cars still have a practical purpose, just as much as horses do. use isn't defined by necessity.
