Ever tried actually growing all the produce you need? Or growing all the "anything" you need?
I tried it with herbs one time. Basil, mint, oregano, rosemary, and a few others. Even put in tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce. This was all in a 20'x10' garden. Everything grew reasonably well. But, of course, I didn't have any foodstuffs for a few months. Then, when it all came in, I ate what was done. Within a month, the garden was all but denuded. The tomatoes were the first to go, as they went in salads, BLTs, tomato sauce and bloody marys.
Basil was next, as I picked almost every leaf off the plant. Sure, I could have left some on there, but then I'd have been buying basil at the store, and that kinda defeats the purpose.
The only thing that survived was rosemary, because that shit is a weed. It kept coming up everywhere. Plus, how often can you really eat rosemary?
I eventually figured out that it was far easier (if a bit more expensive) to buy my shit at the store. If I needed fresh herbs, I could buy the little plants they sell for $4 and use that. If I needed fresh produce, a couple of our local stores have "local produce" sections where the list each item by the grower and location it was grown, and when it was harvested.
Don't get me wrong - I love the idea of having my own garden. But, given my suburban setting (small backyard), I can't really have the size needed to do it. And, I can't grow everything year-round.
