Agree with Dylan, Nixon's southern strategy involved a shift toward "law and order" rhetoric in the aftermath of the gains made by the civil rights movement, clear attempt to woo over disaffected southern racists. It's why the south is now red pretty much every election, aside from the major national victories by Carter and Clinton, who happened to be from the south.

As an example of conservative rank and file bigotry, take a look at AZ's recent law legalizing discrimination against gay people.
How can you observe what conservatives choose to focus their energy on and not come to the conclusion that they are, by and large, a hateful and bigoted group of individuals who are terrified, simply terrified, of anything different than them?
Fortunately the GOP leadership is largely coming out against this farce. I'm sure they'll be decried as RHINOs.
