The problem for the republicans is three-fold:
1.) demographics
Although things are changing now Republicans have historically been insensitive to immigrants and minorities which compose an ever greater and greater portion of our population.
Also as more Americans become educated and urbanized, christianity and 'rural gun culture' are on the decline. This means less voters who care about abortion and 2nd amendment rights.
2.) internal contradictions in bases of support
What we saw with immigration reform is an internal contradiction between two of the GOP's backers, business interests represented by the chamber of commerce, and anti-immigration groups representing the american working class. Reform stalled.
3.) internal contradictions in policy
Being for fiscal responsibility and increased military strength/ spending
Being for the free market and propping up farmers
Being for personal freedom but taking a harsh anti drug stance
