My oldest friend was a massive Linux and networking geek in high school. Went to a community college for two years so he could get a piece of paper, got a bunch of certifications, now makes 80k a year.
Best part is... He's now at the point where he's getting head hunted. Jealous. He handles network security for big companies. He's hoping to get enough experience to move home and contract.

Here in the UK, I know that medicine and other health related degrees are completely free of charge to study to help provide doctors and nurses etc for the NHS. Similarly if you want to go into teacher training after uni that generally is free as well. These tend to work pretty well as far as I'm aware.
