It's not just waiters, though, is it? One is expected to tip everyone, everywhere - especially, it seems to me, in New York. I absent mindedly tipped my daughter when she handed me my bag one time.
It's bloody ridiculous.

I was outraged when I discovered the barman expected a tip every time we bought a round. Well, sod that. I have no objection to adding the usual,"..and one for yourself, darling" If he happens to be a cutie, but not every time.

Philly's got this but getting rid of tipping is a terrible idea. I say this based on years in the service industry plus my love of feasting.
FYI...even if you did get rid of it, I'd still do it....AND...get better service than you.
