First: glory and feeling powerful are being confused, glory refers to public praise and honor

^^^ I think conflict and violence itself is responsible for feelings of power

How does shooting a powerful gun make you feel? How does it feel when your fist connects with someones chest?

Don't disagree. Feeling powerful wasn't actually a factor in my post.

The most immediate reaction of having done hardcore violence to someone else in war is intense depression, even self loathing. You just have to wait for the adrenaline and fight or flight to wear off. Only people who actually enjoy killing, and get some sort of power high from it are nutjobs. Or maybe people consumed with revenge. Or vets you hear bragging about their exploits. Generally means they sat it out in the rear echelon.

Glory is something that is given to someone who's done something that is collectively considered to be a great thing. Its conferred by a third party. Glory isn't a feeling you get from blowing things up. Thats a more a matter of brain chemistry.

When its the public that themselves feel glory over the success of their collective investment, such as in the case of a national war effort, or even the fans of a sports team or whatever...thats something distinct from what is given to the guy who won the key battle or scored the last goal.

My sympathy for the rebels is inversely proportional to their levels of religious fundamentalism. That said...taking sides in that conflict is like choosing between a pile of cat shit or a pile of dog shit. Groups like ANF and Syrian Islamic Front seriously make my skin crawl. Then of course looking the other way you have Assad...who is his own special brand of awful.

Hell with it. What a disaster.
