Truly, I think the sorts of power and status obsessed types who run for political offices would practically do it for free. Its not about the money. Its about primal hierarchy and ego.

The solution is simple. Let people vote with their money. When you pay your taxes, you're allowed to allocate up to $0.50 of your annual taxes as Congressional bonus. If you allocate it, the Congress person gets the money. If you choose not to, the money goes in the general budget.
