It's some kind of intelligence operation/psychological manipulation of the public if you ask me. There is plenty of documentation about how much interest various agencies have taken in the social phenomena surrounding the "UFO" question.

I think they are studying how information travels and takes on a character of it's own when in the wild. Probably to develop more effective propaganda and social conditioning techniques. I give this outcome a 90% probability of being somewhat accurate as a practical assessment of the situation.

I think there probably are other intelligences in existence but if they can come here to study us we are probably not unlike bacteria in a petri dish in comparison to them. Perhaps this has come to light and we are still unsure how to deal with it. I give this outcome maybe 1% or less probability.

The remainder is stuff we haven't considered yet, unknown phenomena, crazy people etc.

Btw, if Iran acknowledged alien existence and here on earth, I would think the Muslim world have already figure out what the aliens are in quran. They probably have similar view as the Christians.
