I was in the cadet force at school because it was compulsory (it's not a nationwide thing, I went to a private school and my fee was funded by the state, military family), anyways I hated it. Stripping an sa80 down and then seeing who can put it back together again in the quickest time soon becomes a boring task. As does marching and any other attempt at getting a bunch of 14 year old kids who couldn't care less to follow ridiculously authoritarian rules.
The cadets are good for those who are set on joining up when they get older as it allows them to get a feel for the military but it doesn't particularly give anything to anyone else. They're probably looked at in a similar way to the scouts.
