There are 3 or 4 synonyms that could have been used for half the words in the above post. And I'm extremely thankful for that.
Dumbing down the language isn't at all a value added idea. Dumbing down pretty much anything is bad news.
The real shame here is the removal of the essay portion. Being able to actually string some sentences together into something at least a little bit pleasing isn't some arcane irrelevancy that should be made optional. Its a foundational skill and students should be judged on it harshly.
Just read political speeches from the first half of the 20th and compare them to that of today. Post-literacy is not something for society to strive for. Its a symptom of decay, not progress.
Why lower the bar?
