now the question is what all this has to do with Marxism. because it's starting to sound a lot like debates in the early 20th century about the "national question," including what criteria define a nation. otto bauer and later Tom nairn and Benedict Anderson. some of this stuff can be applied mechanically (language, "culture," territory, etc.) but what would you then say defines a nation. how are we even measuring cultural influence in the makeup of a nation? Is it just the self definition of a bunch of elites and academics that ascribe to the myth of the founding fathers? can popular culture extend beyond and even contradict dominant nationalist assumptions?
again, how are we even determining the boundaries of this unit, the American nation.
