Actual conservatism started to get murdered when Reagan came along but by the time of Bush/Cheney it was dead and buried.
What passes for that now is apparently plutocracy + fundy Christian zealotry + an intense hatred of "the left."
"Liberals" now would be considered Republicans back in the 80s, and they too are just as much plutocrats just not with the religious stuff and they don't target social programs or dangle poor people as the scapegoat for the nation's economic woes.
The liberal/conservative terms simply don't work anymore, except to follow the cable/MSM newser script where it's good vs. evil (depending on whose team you're on).
Basically we've got: literally batshit crazy and... Not Them.
