The only concern is whipping. For many criminal offenders there's an unpleasant association with the lash that might do more to alienate the punished individual than even imprisonment.
Perhaps going 5 rounds with a bear or something would be more appropriate.

The punishment is "X applications of intense physical pain for short period of time". whipping, whatever. doesn't matter, what it isn't is incarceration for long periods of time, destroying their life
