test need to be significantly harder
the 'teaching to the test' complaint is hilarious. first, if that's all you teach to, you're a horrible teacher because that was the easiest test i took in high school was the standardized state test
secondly, you teach to the test all the other times too, state standards or no. your own tests contain material that you taught, don't they? further you have to understand the concept in order to apply it to different situations. understanding balancing chemical equations allows for your to balance lots of chemical equations instead of just stating that the byproducts of gasoline combustion are water and carbon dioxide. tests should cover the balancing of chemical equations, not the textbook knowledge you can get out of your pocket if you want. so by teaching to the test you have to teach the concept. OH NO, NOW OUR CHILDREN ONLY LEARN STUFF WE ALL AGREED WAS IMPORTANT!!! what about what the teacher thinks is important, like bonzai trees horticulture? why must our children learn math in math class instead of bonzai tree horticulture?

My life has become a single, ongoing revelation that I haven’t been cynical enough.
