I don't think I'm being at all unsympathetic to how difficult teaching is and I'm definitely for better salaries. I just don't see why merit pay should be there to reward meeting arbitrary requirements that don't improve education.

I also wonder (maybe you can tell me Menson), as it comes to my idea: no merit pay, higher base salaries, fire bad teachers...
How hard would the teacher unions fight against making it easier to fire shitty teachers? Would they agree to it for a big pay increase? How big?
