WTF is up with Mother's Day?

I think this day is partially a crock of shit. Not because of kids getting their mothers something, but because husbands are expected to get their wives' gifts as well. f**k Valentines Day was just 3 months ago, but you need ANOTHER shower of money and gifts so soon??

Look, I understand a father helping the kids with a gift for mom - thats expected. Its that the husband is also expected to get something for the wife. I think its retarded and just another greed holiday where women can be showered with gifts to make them feel pretty and/or wanted.

Totally for Mother's Day being about MOMs. If I married you, you presumably are not my mother: don't expect a gift from me AS YOU ARE NOT MY MOM.

ps. I expect no present from the mother of my kids on Father's Day.

I look at gift-giving holidays in 2 categories. Birthdays, Christmas and similar are holidays that we celebrate because of some external source, or something that the recipient has no control over. They don't control their date of birth, or Christ's date of birth (or winter solstice, hahaha). On those days, I give normal presents that I buy at a store.

But, on days where I'm essentially thanking the person for being awesome (Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Anniversaries), I do something different. I make them something. I've made jewelry boxes from purpleheart wood (beautiful when polished to a shine). I've made rings and bracelets from silver (melt down old quarters and work them with small tools). Next year, for our 15th anniversary, I am going to take a Canadian quarter from January 2000 (we got engaged at midnight at the turn of the millennium, in Banff Springs) and make a ring for her.

I don't "have" to do those things. I want to. She usually tells me not to buy her anything. So, I make her things instead.
